The EU HORIZON EUROPE NERITES project (Systematic Autonomous Remote Surveying of Underwater Cultural Heritage Monuments and Artefacts, using non-destructive, cost-effective, and transportable digital solutions) employs innovative monitoring solutions tailored for underwater cultural heritage (UCH) sites that will allow autonomous site’s condition investigation. These advancements offer enhanced cost-effectiveness and precision compared to traditional methods, with a particular emphasis on addressing stone and ceramic degradation caused by biological agents and environmental pollutants prevalent in marine ecosystems, in a cost-effective manner of the overall system at design and operational (mission execution) phase.

Leveraging interdisciplinary scientific approaches, NERITES stands out for its integration of state-of-the-art technologies, offering a unique and innovative solution for in-situ monitoring of UCH assets. Its novel framework facilitates systematic autonomous (self-managed) remote assessment of the preservation status of various UCH elements, including materials, artifacts, and monuments.

The project core lies in the development of a digital infrastructure centered around an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) piloted by elaborate deep AI for mission planning and motion control; while equipped with cutting-edge, non-destructive sensing devices and techniques.

Furthermore, in line with “European Year of Cultural Heritage”, for the 2018 edition, the project aims to promote Calabrian cultural heritage by means of the pre-event Discover Museums and a Brokerage event discovering Calabrian museums and archaeological sites and innovative research results in the this field.

The project, funded by the European Commission for two editions (2018, 2019) aims to introduce people, with a special focus on young people, to science in a simple way demonstrating them that science is not separated from real life.

The aims to reach the general public, mainly younger crowds, in Calabria and Basilicata and acquaint them with scientific research. The project is proposing a fascinating journey across several epochs of human evolution and science, conveying a crucial message: that research represents an intrinsic characteristic of mankind, being, for this reason, free of any barrier and stereotype. Like human imagination, research cannot be confined or limited.

The project fully embraces the European Green Deal, to reverse course and transform climate and environmental challenges into opportunities. It is aimed at all generations and, like a modern Noah, unites them around an ideal, calling them to build a symbolic ark, to convey the message that “Research can help regenerate the planet and save lives”. Researchers from universities and institutions in two regions of southern Italy, Calabria and Basilicata, open the doors of their laboratories; they bring research to the unskilled public and talk to people of any age, to show them the extraordinary normality of their lives and encourage young people to pursue scientific careers while also helping the planet.

The project conveys the message that “research is an inexhaustible (re)source of inspiration to make Europe better for the next generation”. In line with Horizon Europe’s five missions, SuperScienceMe addresses MSCA and Citizen 2022 scope to motivate young people in “shaping more beautiful, sustainable and inclusive forms of living together.”SuperScienceMe brings research results into schools of urban, suburban, and rural areas in two neighbouring regions of Southern Italy (Calabria and Basilicata with more than 3.800 schools) to help build a science-literate society. The 2022-2023 NIGHT editions will support schoolteachers in developing a scientific informal education for a “school beyond the school” to learn from the present/past and to build the future of research.

Research is an inexhaustible (re)source of inspiration to make Europe better for the next generation is the message that SuperScienceMe aims to convey to students, especially those who do not have easy access to education or are less inclined to engage in STEAM fields. The heart of the project is represented by Researchers at Schools which brings research to urban, suburban and rural schools of all levels. The focus is on the five EU Missions.
